Thomas Benner
Thomas Benner fell asleep Saturday morning at 3:50 o'clock at the residence of
deceased's son-in-law W. E. desh, 123 East third street. Deseased was a son of
the late Elias and Sarah Hoffert Benner, was born in Weisport, May 22, 1838 and
was sixty eight years, 6 months and 13 days. He spent his early days on the
extensive farm, now known as the Bethlehem Steel Works farm, and lived in South
Bethlehem nearly all his lifetime. At the outbreak of the Civil War his family
sent three sons to the front, himself and two brothers, Henry and Abraham, who
served valiantly the federal cause, two of them giving up their lives in the
struggle. In Cleveland, Ohio he married Miss Mary Emma Love, who with two sons,
Henry, Superintendent of the Chambersberg Gas Co., and Abraham, superintentent
of the Nazarith Gas Co.; two daughters, Mrs. Clarens Walp, Bethlehem, and Mrs.
W. E. Desh East Third street, and seven grandchildren, survive. For several
years deceased was employed at the old Bethlehem South Gas & Water Co's gas
works on Mechanic street and during the past few years he lived a retired life.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 1 oclock with services at the
house. Interment will be made in Nisky Hill Cemetery. December 9th 1908 The
funeral of Thomas Benner was held from his late residence, 123 East Third
street, at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Rev C. cooper of Allentown
officated at the services in the house and at the family plot. Nisky Hill
Cemetery. The pallbearers were; charles Rice, Harvey M. Ueberroth, Quintus E. T.
d. Snyder, and thomas ganey.
