[53] John Meyer was Born 'Johann' John Meyer on November 29, 1864, in Speyer, Rhineland-Palatinate

Born: in Germany
Died: 1933, of cancer in his 60's {Gall St. Port Richmond Phila. Pa.}
When John Meyer was 12 years old, his sisters took
him to Amsterdam, to work on a sailing vessel as a cabin boy. The reason may
have been was to keep him from being drafted into the Germany Army. John's two
older brothers were in the Army and they were always writing home to send them
food. John jumped ship in Phila. [This was confirmed by my father] The Meyer
family were very hush, hush on many subjects.
How young John survived alone in a strange country, I
do not know? He could have been a sailor on merchant ships. John had a special
talent, he was a born cabinet maker. I know, he made beautiful children's
furniture for my sister Marion and myself, when we were young.
He met Josephine Emily Locher in Phila. Pa. and
married her in 1894 [ date not confirmed] Their first child, Menga born April,
1895.
In the spring of 1895, Cuba took arms against the
Spanish oppression of their small Island. Sometime between 1895 and 1898 when
the U.S. declared war on Spain, John found employment on a gun running ship to
Cuba. They would smuggle guns to the Cubans and if caught by the Spanish, would
mean death. Having a wife and a small child to support, and being an
experienced seaman, it was understandable, because work was hard to find back
them.
John and Josephine [called Emily] lived most of lives
on Gall St. in Phila. Pa. called Port Richmond. The three marble steps to the
front opened up into a vestibule. This small section was built to keep out the
cold air that would come into the livingroom. This long large room was sparsely
furnished. A square dinning room with a large wood round table to seat the
large family. In the kitchen had running water, electric lights, that had been
converted from an old gas fixture and the house was heated by a coal furnace
located in the cellar. Three bedrooms upstairs with a tub in the back bedroom.
A cold weather, flush toilet in an outhouse, attached to the back kitchen wall
and was reached by going out to the back door and into the yard. It was a
beautiful, an oasis in a dirty city. A curved flower bed edged one side of the
yard and planted in the flower bed was a dainty shade tree. The remainder of
the yard was paved with red brick. A hammock was hung between the tree and the
fence. As a child I loved to sit out there. If you opened the high wooden back
gate, you would enter smelly dirty alleyway, because everyone put their garbage
out to be collected by the city garbage collectors. I described this home how I
remember it in the 1930s, how it was in the early 1900s, I do not know. I
believe John must have worked many hours on the yard. This is my assumption,
because he was not the best provider as he was often out of work.
They had seven children and John insisted that the
children speak only English in their home, because they were Americans.
Josephine [Emily] was not happy about that none of her children spoke German. If
her children did not speak German she would teach her oldest grandchildren to
speak the language. I can still remember Grandmom saying, " It can never hurt
to know two languages." My two cousins Lydia and Jean and my sister Marion did
very well but I was the "dumbkoff " of the four granddaughters.
John died in the summer of 1933 in his home on Gall
St. Services were held in the funeral parlor, as it was called in those days. A
very heavy rain held up the Presbyterian services, on the day he was buried.
This quiet, reserved man left little imprint in this world, except leaving his
children and grandchildren a better life in a free country.
