Charles Died in the Vietnam War.
Noted in The Philadelphia Inquirer on May 18, 1968: Sgt. 1/C Charles H. Sandberg, 32, husband of Mrs. Paula Sandberg, of 1905 N. Mutter Street West Kensington Philadelphia, PA.
Sgt. Sandberg first enlisted in the Army in 1953 when he was 17, was discharged in 1957, and last October -10 years later- enlisted again and volunteered for duty in Vietnam. He had been in Vietnam since November.
"It was what he wanted to do," said his German-born wife. "That was the only thing he was happy doing, was being in the service. He died for what he believed was right."
Surviving with his wife, are a son, James; a daughter, Sandra; his mother, Mrs. Lydia Sandberg; his father Raymond Sr.; a brother, Raymond Jr.; and two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Powers, and Mrs. Jean Hawkins. Charles is buried at Philadelphia National Cemetary.
The 31-year-old sergeant first class had served in the Army from 1953 to 1957, reenlisted in 1967 and volunteered for duty in Vietnam. Sandberg was a military policeman during his first stint in the service and worked as an auto mechanic and valve assembler for over six years before reenlisting. He served as an Infantry Operations and Intelligence Specialist. He was also an E7 rank as an operations and platoon sergeant in Vietnam with Company E of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry, 199th Infantry Brigade. 44th INFANTRY PLATOON SCOUT DOG 25th INFANTRY DIVISION. Sandberg died in combat in Vitenam on May 13, 1968.
